Description
This record stands as one of the most cherished memories of my life. The experience of recording my debut album alongside two esteemed icons of jazz, the incredible John Patitucci and the phenomenal Dennis Chambers, in the vibrant atmosphere of the Sound of Sound studio in New York in 1997 was truly a remarkable opportunity for a young musician like myself. We captured the essence of our artistry in just two days, recording the album live in a purely analog format. The emotions I felt during those initial notes are etched in my memory forever; in that moment, I was so overwhelmed with joy that I found myself listening rather than playing. It fills me with happiness to reintroduce this album to those who may not yet be familiar with it. I would also like to express my heartfelt gratitude to my producer at the time, the late Franc Hagege, to whom I dedicate this reissue.
— Thierry Maillard
We are thrilled to share the remarkable achievements of the exceptionally talented and innovative composer and pianist, Thierry Maillard. Over the course of his prolific career, he has produced an impressive portfolio comprising at least 21 albums. It is with great excitement that we announce the availability of his 1998 debut album, *Paris/New York*, which has been primarily accessible in Europe for over two decades, now making its way to American listeners through the renowned Ghost Note label. This release offers an exciting opportunity for audiences to discover the extraordinary talent Maillard exhibited at the very onset of his solo career.
The album commences with the lively composition “Live In New York,” a modern jazz swinger that places Maillard front and center. His remarkable technical prowess and vibrant creativity come to life, encapsulating the essence of the acoustic New York jazz scene during that time. The track “Tea or Drive” elevates this passion further, showcasing a dazzling piano solo reminiscent of the legendary Chick Corea. It is beautifully highlighted by a playful and colorful exchange between Maillard and Chambers. The mood gracefully transitions with the heartfelt ballad “Jamais fini,” which opens and closes with Patitucci’s melodic bass, creating a soothing contrast that captivates the listener.
“Maya” introduces a medium-tempo groove that, despite weaving rapid melodic phrases, skillfully showcases a thoughtful interplay of dynamics and mood shifts. In contrast, the lyrical piece “Monument Valley” serves as a lovely complement to the driving energy present in “Max 2,” while Chambers’ vibrant drum breaks breathe life into the spirited “Bora Bora.” The picturesque composition “L’echiquier” features exquisite bowed bass work by Patitucci, paired with Maillard’s reflective, out-of-tempo improvisations. The track “New Trio” boasts a particularly catchy theme that is destined to resonate deeply with listeners. Rounding off this remarkable album is the upbeat “Memories of LA,” which offers a further glimpse into the seamless and spontaneous interaction among the trio.
Thierry Maillard’s musical journey began at the tender age of eight when he first embraced the accordion, transitioning to the piano at fourteen. His unwavering dedication to classical music led him to the prestigious Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris, where he earned a teaching diploma by the age of seventeen. However, it was the world of jazz that captured his heart. This passion ignited the formation of a trio and a journey that included touring both France and internationally with violinist Débora Seffer’s quartet between 1992 and 1997. This musical odyssey culminated in his visit to New York in 1998, which paved the way for the recording of *Paris/New York*.
Since that pivotal moment, Maillard has been involved in a myriad of exciting projects, from leading a septet featuring a string quartet to performing intimate duos with Seffer. He has orchestrated numerous trios, toured Asia with a string orchestra, recorded a big band tribute to the legendary Frank Zappa, and even composed music for films. Currently, he is exploring new creative horizons with a trio that incorporates synthesizers and is diligently working on a solo piano album.
Ultimately, *Paris/New York* splendidly exemplifies Thierry Maillard’s emergence as a jazz giant from the very beginnings of his illustrious career. We wholeheartedly invite you to immerse yourself in this extraordinary work and celebrate the remarkable artistry of Maillard and his talented colleagues.
