Saxophonist, Composer, and Bandleader
Steve Colman
Steve Coleman began playing music at age 13 in Chicago, first learning violin and later switching to alto saxophone.
Inspired by Charlie Parker and Chicago musicians such as Von Freeman and Bunky Green, he developed a passion for improvisation.
In 1978, he moved to New York City, where he performed with respected artists including Thad Jones, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor, and Dave Holland.
He later formed Steve Coleman and Five Elements, which became the main ensemble for his musical ideas and performances.
Coleman helped develop the M-Base concept, a creative philosophy focused on improvisation, personal experience, and structured rhythms.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he released influential albums and created computer software that could generate musical improvisations.
His research took him to Ghana, Cuba, Senegal, India, Egypt, Brazil, and other countries to study ancient musical and spiritual traditions.
He collaborated with musicians from different cultures and incorporated African, Caribbean, and Indian influences into his work.
Coleman continued experimenting with spontaneous composition, complex rhythms, orchestration, and interactive computer technology.
Through M-Base Concepts, Inc., he continues to perform, educate musicians, conduct research, and promote music as a lifelong learning experience.
